Although Richie originally found his cling to fame with R&B group the Commodores, he would eventually make a name for himself with a solo career that established him as the balladeer of the 80s. Following numerous smash hits, multiple Grammy awards, and a collaboration with Michael Jackson on the single “We Are the World”, Richie became an international superstar whose blend of R&B and soul was infamous.
Since the peak of his celebrity status in the 80s, Richie has been recording albums much less frequently. While his popularity has slightly declined in North America, it’s grown exponentially in foreign countries, particularly in the Arab world. However, his last album Tuskegee, an album devoted entirely to reinterpretations of some of Richie’s classics with numerous guest country artists, was a startling but fruitful commercial and critical success, and re-established Lionel as a significant component in the contemporary music scene. The album included collaborations with country legends such as Blake Shelton, Shania Twain (who has an upcoming gig at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in LA), Kenny Rogers, Rascal Flatts (who will travel to Toronto this year along with Sheryl Crow), and Willie Nelson (who will be coming to Ontario this summer).
This year, Lionel Richie will be paying particular attention to his devout Canadian fans! His latest All the Hits All Night Long Tour will be travelling to Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, Montreal’s Bell Centre, Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheatre and, last but certainly not least, London’s Budweiser Gardens.
