In 2009, the world was introduced to the awe-inspiring artistry of Florence + the Machine through Lungs. Featuring career-defining hits such as “Dog Days Are Over” and “Cosmic Love”, Lungs established that the group was anything but small-scale. On Lungs, strings and harps allowed Welch’s vocals to soar above reality and reason. The album was an instant hit, as demonstrated by how it topped the UK Albums Chart. In retrospect, Florence + the Machine heralded their arrival with the sound of Welch’s signature howl of victory.

In 2011, Florence + the Machine returned with the ornate splendor of Ceremonials. Featuring “Shake It Off” and “What the Water Gave Me”, Ceremonials was far heavier album than the group’s previous effort. Whereas Lungs thrived in brightly illuminated moments of joyful warmth, Ceremonials broke new ground through its exploration of death and pain. Ceremonials proved to be a tour-de-force that successfully amplified the sound of its predecessor. On Ceremonials, the drum booms, the harp serenades, and the vocals climb higher than ever. Naturally, the only way to follow a blaring album like Ceremonials in a creatively relevant manner was to create a piece that was instrumentally and vocally stripped down.

Released in 2015, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful was a brooding and reflective album that boasted a strong folk influence. Featuring “Ship to Wreck”, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful debuted at number one in the UK and the US. The Grammy-nominated album did a seemingly impossible feat; it proved that Florence + the Machine do not require immense vocal deliveries and heavy instrumentation to create something of substance. Indeed, the album demonstrated that, even with a minimalistic approach, Florence + the Machine can be as strong as ever. Now, Welch and Co. have returned with their most personal effort yet, 2018’s High as Hope. The group’s fourth album is remarkable – a dazzling collection of tunes that burst with vulnerable lyricism and emotional resonance. It is, by far, Florence + the Machine’s best album yet, displaying exquisite harmonies and sweeping orchestras that beg to be replicated in a live setting. Fortunately, Florence + the Machine will be visiting Montreal’s Bell Centre and Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on their upcoming High as Hope tour!
